How to Use SocialSiftr
How to Use SocialSiftr

Having trouble keeping up with your Facebook friends and people you’re following on Twitter?  You’re not alone.  The ongoing torrent of posts can quickly bury the information that is most important – or most entertaining – to you.

SocialSiftr is here to help.  This easy-to-use tool – designed by people like you – lets you cut through the clutter by quickly browsing through a list of friends who have recently posted and selecting the ones you most want to hear from most.

The basic steps are:

  1. Sign Up for the service
  2. On the Social Networks page, connect with Facebook or Twitter or go directly to the Feeds page
  3. On the Feeds page, sort your “Friends”
  4. Select the social media network icon to the right of your friend’s name to see their posts
  5. Click on the tab at the top of the Friend’s column to switch back and forth between social networks

Important:  Please make sure that you allow pop-ups for SocialSiftr which are required (and mostly behind the scenes) for the service to work.

Here’s how it works.

You can sign up to SocialSiftr using your Facebook or Twitter accounts (don’t worry, more social networks are on their way!) or with your e-mail address and a password.

After you’ve signed up, you’ll go to your Social Networks page under My Account.  If you signed up through Facebook, then that network will already be connected.  To add your Twitter account, click on the “Connect” button. Similarly, if you signed up through Twitter, you’ll just have to connect your Facebook account.  If you signed up using e-mail, you’ll have to connect both social networks. (To disconnect from a network, come back to your Social Networks page and click on the “remove” button.)

After you’ve connected, you’ll go to your “Feeds” page which is divided into three columns:

  1. The friend sorting options on the left
  2. The list of friends in the middle
  3. The “feed” column in the right

(And, of course, a fourth column for eventual advertising messages.)  It will take several seconds for the page to load because we are gathering all of your messages from that network, massaging the data and displaying the list of friends with their posting information.

At the top of the Friend’s column, you’ll see tabs for Facebook and Twitter.  That’s how you switch between the two social networks.

The friend column lists all of the friends that have recently posted.*  You can sort the order of how your friends are listed:  alphabetically, by latest post or oldest post, number of posts, or by “favorites” (more on that in a minute).  To the right of each friend’s name we will show how many posts they have for each network.  And beneath their name shows when they last posted.

Click on the social network icon to the right of your friend’s name and his/her posts will appear in the right-hand column.  You can then browse through the posts, like posts, click on the plus sign (+) to expand those posts you want to read more about, see related comments or comment yourself.  (By the way, when you first come in, your full Facebook or Twitter news feed will appear in the right column until you select a friend).

If you’re looking at a friend’s post and want to return to your regular news feed, click the “home” icon on top of the Feed column.

Clicking on a friend’s name in the “friends” column or “feeds” column will take you directly to their page on Facebook or Twitter.

Connecting Friends’ Facebook and Twitter Accounts

You’ll see a plus sign (+) to the right of the friend’s name.  If you’re on the Facebook tab, clicking the plus sign will allow you to add that friend’s Twitter account.  And if you’re on the Twitter tab, clicking on the plus sign will allow you to add their Facebook account.

A pop-up box will allow you to add or search for your friend’s account. (Note: their account will only appear if they have recently posted on that network.)

You’ll then see both the Facebook and Twitter icons and you can toggle between the two for that particular friend.

Finally, you can “favorite” Facebook or Twitter friends by clicking on the star next to their name.  You can sort the friend list so all of your favorites appear on top.  (Note, a friend that you have “favorited” in Facebook or Twitter will not show up as a favorite on SocialSiftr.)

Account Information

Click on your image in the upper right of the screen to access your account page.  On that page, you can:

  1. Add or change basic information about you (name, e-mail, gender and location)
  2. Change your SocialSiftr password
  3. Add or delete which social media networks you want to track
  4. Delete your SocialSiftr account (which we hope you won’t do!).

We hope SocialSiftr will make keeping track of social media activity a much more enjoyable experience.  If you have any questions or suggestions, please send them to helper@socialsiftr.com.

*Because of Facebook limitations and inconsistencies, the number of posts that can be displayed at any one time could be anywhere from 200 to 800 posts.  Twitter limits the number of posts that can be shared with third-party apps to 800
