Help: Frequently Asked Questions
Help: Frequently Asked Questions

  1. SocialSiftr freezes after logging in or signing up. How do I unfreeze?

Make sure you turn off pop-up blockers in your browser for SocialSiftr (i.e. allow pop-ups for this service).  Pop-ups are necessary for us to display your social network messages. Instructions on how to do this are available for Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari browsers.

  2. I signed up using my e-mail address but I can’t log in. What happened?

When you sign up with your e-mail address, we send a confirmation e-mail to make sure you’re a real person.  There is a link in that e-mail to verify your account.  Click on that link and you should be OK.  If you don’t see the e-mail, go to “My Account” (under your profile picture) and select “Basic Information” and you can have the confirmation e-mail re-sent.

  3. How do I see a friend’s posts?

Just click on the icon on the right side of a friend’s listing (“F” for Facebook and the Twitter “bird” for Twitter).  Their posts will appear on the right column.

  4. What are the numbers that appear under the social network icons?

Those numbers represent the number of posts that friend has.  So, for example, if there is a “7” under the Facebook icon, that friend has seven posts in the feed we captured.  You can sort the Friend’s list by number of posts.

  5. How do I see comments or respond to a Facebook post?

On the right side of each post, you’ll see a plus sign (+).  Click on that symbol to expand the post to see other comments and the comment box if you want to respond.

  6. How do I expand a Tweet?

On the right side of each Tweet, you’ll see a plus sign (+).  Click on that symbol to expand the Tweet, as you would on Twitter. At the bottom of each tweet you’ll see symbols to reply to a Tweet, re-tweet and favorite a tweet.

  7. How do I go back to the regular Facebook or Twitter news feed?

On the top of the Feed column, you’ll see a “home” icon.  Click on that to get back to the regular Facebook or Twitter feed.

  8. How do I add a new social media network?

Click on your profile picture on the upper right corner and select “My Account.”  Then select Social Networks and click on either Facebook or Twitter to connect to those networks (more to come in the future).

  9. How do I delete a social media network?

Click on your profile picture on the upper right corner and select “My Account.”  Then select Social Networks and click on either Facebook or Twitter to remove those networks.  Any information we have about your account will be deleted from our database. You can add them back at a later time.

  10. How do I switch between my Facebook and Twitter feeds?

At the top of the friend’s column, select the tab for either Facebook or Twitter.

  1. What does Search do?

You can search for any information that appears in the feed.  You can search by someone’s name or any keyword to identify topics discussed in posts on that page.

  2. What is the “Auto Refresh” pull down menu for?

The Auto Refresh pull down allows you to adjust how frequently you want the service to check for new messages.  Auto will check frequently for new messages or you can have Socialsiftr check every 2, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes.  You can also select “No Auto Refresh” to turn refreshing off.

  3. Can I add multiple accounts from the same network?

Unfortunately, we don’t offer that capability at this time.

  4. Can I view social networks other than Facebook and Twitter?

Not yet.  But we do plan on adding other networks  in the near future.

  5. How far back can I see posts?

It depends on how active your news feed is.  Both Facebook and Twitter limit the number of posts that third-party apps can access.  Facebook’s API (which provides developers with access to the Facebook platform) sends inconsistent results (anywhere from 200 to 800 posts).  Twitter’s limit is 800 posts.   So, if you have a lot of active friends, you may only see a couple of days’ worth of posts from each network.

  6. How come I can’t see all of my Facebook friends?

Facebook’s privacy tools allow users to control who can access their data.  Some users don’t allow (knowingly or not) third-party apps to access their data. So, if a friend does not have “Apps You Use” turned on, their posts won’t show up on SocialSiftr.  (Users can change that setting on Facebook by accessing Account Settings and then Apps.  “Apps You Use” setting is on the top and should be set to “On”).

  7.  Why are some people showing up on my Facebook friends list even though I haven’t friended them?

SocialSiftr is grabbing all of the posts that appear on your Facebook News Feed. You’ll notice that sometimes a “non-friend” will appear on the News Feed congratulating a friend on an event, e.g. “Joe Smith and 2 other people wrote on Betty Jones’ timeline for her birthday.”   So, unfortunately, in those cases we can’t distinguish between real friends and “friends of friends.”

  8. Why does it take time to load?

SocialSiftr is accessing hundreds of posts at one time, every time you log on to our service.  It takes a little while to go through all of those pasts and identify friends, number of posts, latest post and oldest post, etc.  Once the data is loaded, however, all sorting and accessing feeds will be immediate.

  9. What are favorites?

You can designate which of your friends (and people you follow on Twitter) are “favorites” and then sort the friends list by “favorites” so all of those people come to the top.  Facebook and Twitter both allow you to designate favorites (for example Facebook has “close friends” and Twitter has “Lists”) but those are separate form SocialSiftr’s favorites.

  10. What do you do with my e-mail and social media account information?

We only use that information to validate your SocialSiftr account and your accounts on social networks.  We don’t share that information with any third parties.

  11. Why can’t I change my password?

If you originally signed up using Facebook or Twitter, you should have received a confirmation e-mail with a temporary password.  You’ll need to plug that password in to create a new one.  If you don’t have that original e-mail, go to “My Account” under your profile picture and select “Basic Information”.  You can have us re-send the confirmation e-mail to you.

  12. Is there a mobile app for SocialSiftr?

Not yet.  If the service becomes wildly popular, we’ll create one.
